Why does Evolve4Life focus on Youth?
Because I lost my brother to suicide in 1998 and no family should have to experience that.
Because I have a 'Tween' of my own.
Because global Youth Suicide rates are wholly unacceptable
Because the legacy we are leaving future generations requires strength, courage & creativity
Because human potential is unlimited and humanity hasn't even started 'being human' yet

Our Legacy to Our Kids
I love the quote; 'people will not remember you by what you said or what you did, but by how you made them feel'. Then I remember that those who will remember us are our younger generations now. And it poses the question. How are our young people feeling? This next generation of parents & teachers for the world? Let me tell you. It's not good.
The American Psychiatric Society puts suicide as the 3rd highest cause of death in 15-24yr olds in the USA. The World Health Organisation concurs adding that globally there is one death every 40 seconds.
Australian Bureau of Statistics has said that Youth suicides in Australia are higher than in many other countries, and are increasing.'Australia's youth suicide rate is 4th highest globally after Iceland, Finland and New Zealand - 2nd only to road traffic accidents'.
What I find even more disturbing is that according to QLD Health, 90% of those who die by suicide meet the criteria for a recognised mental health disorder but are not under the care of a health professional.
Headspace, Australia's National Youth Mental Health Foundation, have commented that 'only 1 in 4 young people diagnosed as experiencing mental health problems actually receives professional help' through the Australian Health System, that only 50% of those diagnosed as having severe mental health problems receives any professional help at all and that these untreated mental health problems in young people lead to high suicide rates in early to mid adulthood.
Because of the process involved in collating statistics it is difficult to know the situation exactly. Statistics are several years out of date. What we do know is that the GFC and current financial stress can only make it worse.
What is perhaps more of a concern is the favourite way of measuring the cost is in $. (17billion annually QLD Health) 'These young people are our next generation of parents & world leaders'.
If they are sad and angry can we blame them? If they watch us and find it hard to look forward to their lives is it any wonder? Are you happy? Is life fun? Be honest. The elephants and the irony flap in the wind for all to see. We're hypnotised not to see it. They not so yet.
What is the answer? Thankfully awareness is the start. And urgency and commitment to making a difference. Prevention rather than the current 'too little too late' cure approach. Conscious education which empowers our young people and provides them tools to deal with whatever is coming at them from the world whilst inspiring the creativity needed to fix the legacy we're leaving.
